Virtually all organisations communicate with their supply chain partners electronically. This can range from simple email exchanges of orders and invoices to partners having connectivity into your network so that they can access your supply chain systems directly.
If your supply chain partners do not take sufficient steps to ensure that they are cyber secure this immediately puts you more at risk.
With the regulatory environment getting more stringent and the increasing threat of ever more sophisticated AI based cyber attacks, effective cybersecurity in the supply chain is more important than ever. In fact, businesses and government organisations are increasingly vetting the cybersecurity arrangements of members of their supply chains, to ensure resilience and compliance with legal and regulatory standards. Those who fail to comply are at risk of losing valuable contracts.
What can be done?
If you are a supplier, it is important that you are cyber secure and compliant with all relevant and required standards and you can demonstrate that to your customers. If you are a customer, you should seek assurances from members of your supply chain that they are taking all necessary steps to ensure cyber resilience. Furthermore, you need to ensure that you have defences in place to minimise the risk to your own systems should a member of your supply chain suffer an attack or breach.
Why do it?
Supply chains are part and parcel of modern day business, often, operating around the globe. But, as with any chain, they are only as strong as their weakest link. Having a clear and continuing overview of the cybersecurity measures in place across the entire supply chain is key to making it more resilient to attack or breach, reducing the very significant risk of business interruption.
