Before the outbreak of COVID-19, companies had different approaches to remote-working:  some didn’t do it at all, while others were at different maturity levels with the number and type of employees working at home, outside of the company’s network.

This pandemic has quickly forced organisations to put in place the necessary infrastructure to enable most, if not all, their employees to work remotely.  The impact of this change is staggering and has posed enormous challenges for these businesses.

Pre COVID-19, the internal network was where the main security focus was which guarded the crown jewels of the organisation- the internal company information. Any remote worker was provided infrastructure to access the corporate intranet via VPN- (virtual private network) based security or via VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure). These traditional solutions are costly and require high levels of management and maintenance which might make it possible for larger organisations but less accessible for their SME counterparts.

Indeed, according to a recent survey by private equity firm, Leonne International, a third of UK businesses don’t have the technical infrastructure to handle long term remote working. Many of these companies have been thrown in at the deep end and don’t have in-house IT resources to help them make the switch from in-office working to at-home working safely and securely, leaving them at risk of cybersecurity or data breaches which could have potentially catastrophic long term consequences.

Millions of workers are isolated at home for the foreseeable future, making it critical that business leaders provide them with appropriate access to company systems and data to enable them to do their jobs effectively but do so in a way which doesn’t pose a cybersecurity risk.
